The radiation doses received by the off-site responders in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident were assessed. Atmospheric dispersion simulation was conducted with the source term of the previous research to calculate the atmospheric concentration and ground surface deposition in the municipalities where off-site responders actives. The external exposure dose from cloudshine and groundshine, the internal exposure dose due to inhalation of radioactive plume and resuspended radio nuclei, and the temporal and spatial distribution within each municipality were assessed. As a result of comparing the assessed values of the external exposure dose with the measured values of the personal dosimeter, the measured values were within the assessed range. As a result of our assessment with internal dose exposure, if the exposures occurred without protective measures, the potential daily effective dose in the period between 12 and 31 March 2011 were several tens mSv per day or more in the relatively high dose area. Therefore, to keep the doses received by the responders below the reference level of 20 mSv recommended by the ICRP, it is necessary to ensure that the protective measures for internal exposures such as masks are taken, and to manage the time spent for their activity at least daily.

In this study, radiation doses from natural radiation sources in Japan were reviewed with the latest knowledge and data. Total annual effective dose from cosmic-ray exposure can be evaluated as 0.29 mSv. The annual effective dose from external exposure to terrestrial radiation for Japanese population can be evaluated as 0.33 mSv using the data of nationwide survey by the National Institute of Radiological Sciences. The Japan Chemical Analysis Center (JCAC) performed the nationwide radon survey using a unified method for radon measurements in indoor, outdoor and workplace. The annual effective dose for radon inhalation was estimated using a current dose conversion factor, and the values were estimated to be 0.50 mSv. The annual effective dose from thoron was reported as 0.09 mSv by UNSCEAR and then the annual effective dose from inhalation can be described as 0.59 mSv. According to the report of large scale survey of foodstuff by JCAC, the effective dose from main radionuclides due to dietary intake can be evaluated to be 0.99 mSv. Finally, Japanese population dose from natural radiation can be assessed as 2.2 mSv which is near to the world average value of 2.4 mSv.

The review of the evacuation area due to the accident of TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station has completed and the deregulation has begun in some regions. The authors started this research in order to contribute to the understanding of individual dose that is assumed after the return of the residents. Measurements and evaluation using personal dosemeters were conducted at the typical living locations in the area where the evacuation orders are ready to be lifted and the residence restriction area. So the relationship between air dose and personal dose equivalent there was demonstrated observationally and experimentally. In addition, the estimation of the residents' individual doses in the pattern of their social lives expected after returning home.

Absorbed dose to tooth enamel and organ doses were obtained by Monte Carlo calculations using EGS4 code in combination with a mathematical human model with a newly defined teeth-part. The calculations gave quantitative relations between tooth enamel dose and organ doses for some cases of external photon exposure. It was also found that tooth enamel dose depends more significantly on energy of incident photons than the other organ dose or the effective dose. The obtained data are to be useful for the assessment of individual dose in past exposure events by the ESR dosimetry with tooth enamel.

Environmental radiation monitoring around the Tokai Reprocessing Plant has been performed since 1975, based on "Safety Regulations for the Tokai Reprocessing Plant, Chapter IV - Environmental Monitoring". This annual report presents the results of the environmental monitoring and the dose estimation to the hypothetical inhabitants due to the radioactivity discharged from the plant during April 2000 to March 2001. Appendices present comprehensive information, such as monitoring program, monitoring results, meteorological data and annual discharges from the plant.
